Paco Renteria: 'Nhạc của tôi là Freeplay phóng khoáng'

Nghệ sĩ đàn guitar xuất sắc Mexico, cũng là đại sứ âm nhạc Mexico trong năm 2010, gây ấn tượng cho khán giả bởi sự thân thiện, dễ gần. Anh có cuộc trò chuyện với VnExpress khi đến VN biểu diễn tại Hà Nội và Festival Huế.

- Điều gì đã giúp anh đến với âm nhạc?

- Bố mẹ tôi đều làm nghệ thuật, mẹ tôi là họa sĩ, còn bố thì rất hay nghe nhạc cổ điển. Ở nhà tôi có cả phòng thu. Đó chính là những thuận lợi gián tiếp dẫn dắt tôi đến với âm nhạc.

- Tại sao anh lựa chọn guitar?

- Khi lên 7 tuổi, sau khi xem một biểu biểu diễn guitar, tôi đã đòi bố mua cho một cây đàn. Ông bảo “OK” và mua ngay về một cây guitar rất nhỏ trên đó có in hình cờ Mexico. Khi nhìn thấy cây guitar đồ chơi đó, tôi không chịu và nói: “Không, con muốn cây guitar thật cơ”. Và như thế, tôi bắt đầu tập guitar. Mới đầu tôi tập chơi nhạc cổ điển, sau đó là nhạc Latin, nhạc Mexico - tất nhiên, rồi jazz, flamenco…

- Âm hưởng chung của album gần đây nhất của anh “Paco Renteria en Concierto”?

- Album đó thực chất đã ra mắt được gần một năm rồi, còn album mới nhất mà tôi đang tiến hành quảng bá là “Talisman”, sẽ phát hành vào tháng 7.

Hai album này có rất nhiều điểm tương đồng. Tôi hiểu và yêu rất nhiều thể loại âm nhạc từ nhạc Latin cho đến jazz hay nhạc phương Đông. Chơi guitar quan trọng là chơi nhiệt tình, đầy đam mê. Nhạc Latin, nhạc Mexico, nhạc Tây Ban Nha thì thúc giục lòng nhiệt huyết, nhạc phương Đông bí ẩn và thần thoại, còn nhạc jazz và blues thì có linh hồn.

Tôi tự tạo nên một dòng nhạc của riêng mình. Và thế là thính giả bắt đầu đặt tên cho âm nhạc của tôi, nhiều cái tên lạ lắm. Tuy nhiên cá nhân tôi chẳng thích bất kỳ cái tên hoa mỹ nào cả. Tôi chỉ gọi nó đơn giản là “freeplay”. Vì tôi yêu thích nhiều thể loại nhạc đến vậy, nên tôi lựa chọn ở mỗi loại một chút để tất cả được hoà quyện vào âm nhạc của mình. “Freeplay” là cái tên diễn tả sự tự do, phóng khoáng, thể hiện cách sống của tôi, tính cách của tôi.

- Anh sắp ra mắt bộ sưu tập 5 đĩa đơn đánh dấu những bước phát triển của mình cùng 2 đĩa nhạc mới. Anh nghĩ mình đã đi đến đâu trong sự nghiệp âm nhạc?

Đến với Việt Nam, Paco biểu diễn tại Festival Huế trong ba đêm 9, 10, 12/6. Sau đó, anh trở lại Hà Nội ra mắt khán giả Nhà hát Lớn trong đêm 14/6. Paco Renteria cũng từng giành được rất nhiều danh hiệu như “Nghệ sĩ đàn guitar tầm cỡ quốc tế người Mexico của nền nghệ thuật đương đại”, “Nhân vật tiêu biểu Mexico năm 2008”, hay giải thưởng “Đức Chúa bạc” đối với chuyển thể âm nhạc trong lĩnh vực điện ảnh.

- Nếu được đề cử Grammy hay những tấm bằng, những giải thưởng trên giấy thì cũng chỉ là cái vẻ bề ngoài mà thôi. Tôi chỉ mong muốn mình được công chúng yêu mến. Khi đến nghe hòa nhạc của tôi, họ bước đến chỗ tôi và nói: “Paco, tôi thích buổi diễn của anh. Âm nhạc của anh đã thay đổi cuộc đời tôi”. Đó là điều đẹp nhất đối với tôi. Khi chơi đàn, tôi cố gắng lĩnh hội phần hồn, phần cảm xúc của âm nhạc, đưa chúng đến đầu ngón tay và dây đàn rồi truyền lại tất cả điều kỳ diệu đó tới khán thính giả.

- Cảm tưởng của anh khi là Đại sứ âm nhạc Mexico tại nước ngoài trong năm 2010?

- Tôi cảm thấy rất vui và tự hào vì được công nhận. Thêm vào đó là trách nhiệm, trách nhiệm vinh danh nền âm nhạc Mexico. Phải nói rằng Mexico có nhiều tên tuổi lớn trong lĩnh vực âm nhạc hay thể thao. Tôi cũng chỉ như một hạt cát nhỏ mà thôi. Điều quan trọng là cần phải thể hiện cho mọi người biết về nền âm nhạc của Mexico.

- Tại sao anh quyết định đến Việt Nam trong tour diễn thế giới của mình?

- Khi mọi người nói với tôi về ý tưởng đến Việt Nam, cảm giác đầu tiên của tôi là thú vị và có vẻ như siêu hiện thực. Thực chất trong việc này tôi có đồng minh, ông Sergio Rivadeneyra Martell, Đại biện lâm thời của Mexico tại Việt Nam. Ông rất ủng hộ việc tôi đến đây biểu diễn và giúp đỡ tôi rất nhiều về mọi mặt. Hai chúng tôi cùng chung mục đích và mong muốn tổ chức một hoạt động văn hoá tại Việt Nam.

Khi vừa tới Việt Nam, ấn tượng lớn nhất của tôi là rất nhiều xe máy chạy trên đường, rất nhiều. Tôi muốn sau này có cơ hội được trở lại đây biểu diễn.

- Các màn trình diễn của anh trong những đêm diễn ở Festival Huế và Nhà hát Lớn Hà Nội có gì đặc biệt?

- Đây là hai sân khấu rất khác nhau nếu xét trên góc độ về mối liên hệ giữa nghệ sĩ và công chúng. Nhà hát Lớn là sân khấu đóng, trong khi Festival Huế là sân khấu mở. Tại Huế, khán giả có thể lựa chọn xem hay không xem bạn biểu diễn. Vì thế ở Festival Huế tôi cố gắng biểu diễn thật sinh động, sáng tác hết mình, nói chung là tôi sẽ làm những gì có thể để giữ khán giả ở lại cho tới hết buổi biểu diễn.

Còn ở Nhà hát Lớn, khi khán giả đã đến, ngồi trong khán phòng nhà hát và họ sẵn sàng thưởng thức âm nhạc, tôi sẽ diễn nhẹ nhàng hơn. Tất nhiên cũng sẽ không nhàm chán.

- Tại Festival Huế, có đến hơn 30 đoàn nghệ thuật của 28 nước tham dự, anh nghĩ nét riêng nổi bật trong tiết mục của anh là ở điểm nào?

- Festival Huế không phải là một cuộc thi thố về âm nhạc nên tôi không có ý định giành thứ hạng. Tuy nhiên, cách chơi “free play” là triết học âm nhạc của tôi. Chính điều đó sẽ làm nên sự khác biệt. Với mỗi buổi hòa nhạc, tôi đều chơi như thể đó là buổi hòa nhạc cuối cùng của cuộc đời mình.

Tôi rất vinh dự được biểu diễn tại Festival Huế lần này cùng rất nhiều nghệ sĩ tên tuổi đến từ nhiều nước trên thế giới.

- Anh từng chơi nhạc trong trailer bộ phim nổi tiếng “Huyền thoại Zorro” của đạo diễn Martin Compell. Anh nhớ gì về kỷ niệm đó?

- Hơn cả một kỷ niệm. Có những điều ta trải qua mà ta có cảm tưởng rằng nó rất tuyệt vời. Đây chính là một trong những kỷ niệm như vậy.

- Từng chơi nhạc bên cạnh những tên tuổi lớn như Carlos Santana hay Luciano Pavarotti, cảm nghĩ của anh như thế nào?

- Họ là những huyền thoại âm nhạc thực sự. Santana cũng là đồng hương của tôi. Chúng tôi đều được sinh ra tại bang Jalisco, Mexico. Thực tế là có nhiều nhạc sĩ chẳng là gì cả, nhưng họ cứ tưởng mình là “chai bia duy nhất trong sân vận động”, trong khi những con người thực sự vĩ đại như Santana hay Pavarotti thì lại rất giản dị, rất khác. Họ là hai trong số những nghệ sĩ mà tôi rất ngưỡng mộ và tôi học được rất nhiều điều từ họ.

Music, dance and fashion pieces blended seamlessly into a cultural mosaic

Mexican guitarist, singer and composer, Paco Renteria, whose philosophy is “sing as if tomorrow never comes” composed a song about Vietnam titled
Sleeping in and lazing about in the hotel room were not options during the recent Hue Festival. With around 15 events and performances each day, the hardest part was choosing which to attend.
The lyrical landscape of King Tu Duc’s Tomb was brought to life by French artist Denis Tricot, who had constructed one of his trademark wood installations: cylindrical wood beams hung with wires that swirled through the hills and courtyards.
At the tomb, Tricot’s elegant birch wood strings curved and rippled like endless waves and graceful pine-tree hills. The lines hid themselves in garden leaves and reappeared at the lake house, only to disappear again into the lotus pond surrounding the Tu Duc Tomb.
Tricot said the interwoven wooden threads appeared to invite and draw visitors to the palace.
“At first, people were a bit indifferent to my work, but when it developed, people become curious, and appreciated it.”
He said he owed the success to hardworking Vietnamese assistants.
“They really concentrated and openly gave their opinion on the work. That kind of thing in young people encourages and inspires me with new ideas. The young handicraft workers in France are not like that.”
At night, the Dai Noi (Royal Citadel) shone bright with several brilliantly-colored stages. All kinds of music and art performances made for what seemed like an endless party of singing and dancing. Each stage was located far enough from the others so the sounds did not overlap.
Russian dreams
Walking around the citadel, visitors found themselves pulled in various directions, with each new stage inviting observers to stay, while others urged the adventure to continue.

The most popular show was probably a performance by Divertisement Flamingo, a dance troupe from Russia.
A young contingent of dancers from 8 to 24 years old combined classical ballet, traditional Russian moves, and sport dances. The performance was both controlled and wild, with most kids in the audience smiling from ear to ear, eyes wide with excitement at the quick and vivid movements of the young dancers threading their way through colorful ensemble of festive music.
Saranchuk Inna said this was the third time her group had performed at the Hue Festival.
“We were very happy with the audience and this encouraged us to dance better.”
At first, groups of children watching the performance were too scared and shy to come close. But as the dancers hit their stride, the kids slowly moved closer and closer, eyes glued to the artists.
Several walked up after the show and gave the dancers flowers.
“Although we couldn’t talk directly to each other, I felt their love.”
Inna also felt her artistic connection with Vietnam go the other way. She was very impressed with the Vietnamese performances she saw that night.
“I like Vietnamese and traditional Hue dancing with its music and hand dancing. My daughter likes to dance with hand and finger movements like Vietnamese dancers.”
Inna and Divertisement even performed their own dance with conical hats inspired by traditional Vietnamese dancing.
“I only wish more Vietnamese performances were translated into English or Russian,” she said.
From Mexico with love
Mexican singer-songwriter Paco Renteria was a highlight of the evening. He lived up to his stated credo of singing “as if tomorrow will never come.”
The stage in front of Renteria was also crowded with youthful spirits dancing and singing along. In a loose and light outfit that looked like an Indian kurta, and with his long hair and bare feet, Renteria looked like some kind of priest whose bible and belief were music and love. It was not merely the performance, but the emotional conversations of music between Renteria’s voice, guitar and his drummer and trumpeter.
“I have a mission and that is to give my heart to the stage,” he said. He certainly fulfilled it that night.

THUA THIEN – HUE – Anyone feeling like basking in flaming Latin guitar melodies in Hue city this week, should Paco Renteria and his band inside the Royal Citadel.

The Mexican artists on Thursday night set the atmosphere around the stage west of Thai Hoa Palace aflame, when hundreds, locals and foreigners alike, moved down from their seats to sway and twist together in time to the music.

Flamenco guitarist Renteria, who was confered by Mexican president Felipe Calderin as the musical ambassador for Mexico to foreign countries, presented his own style called "freeplay".

The style uses the freedom of combining various instruments to create the highest levels of sensation and emotion in an audience.

The artists performed fascinating works like Mariachi, Piel de Mujer and Beunion Mora. Sudden-inspiration exchanges with a humorous percussionist, a hilarious trumpet, and a polished bassist driving the crowd.

"Very good" was all that a group of French tourists exclaimed about the show.

"They have given us great moments of music virtuosity," said 23-year-old spectator Tran Thuy Linh. "They are very friendly and easygoing off stage as well."

Renteria said he felt a beautiful connection with Hue people.

"I'm very happy to be here. Look at the audience, they gave us a raptious reception," he said. "Isn't it the most important thing for me?"

"Many thanks to the Hue Festival for providing me with the opportunity to play."

Renteria said he was composing a song about Viet Nam to demonstrate his love for the country.

People hoping to see the artists can catch them at their last performance in Hue Festival tonight, on the stage to the left of the Thai Hoa Palace.

Paco Renteria is considered the most successful guitarist in his country. He was granted a special honour medal, "The excellent Mexican guitarist of contemporary arts" by the Star Square Cultural Foundation.

This year he was responsible for promoting Mexican cultural events abroad to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the country's revolution and the 200th anniversary of its independence. — VNS

Famous Mexican guitarist to visit Vietnam

Mexico’s renowned guitarist, Paco Renteria, will appear at the Hanoi Opera House on June 14 following a performance at the 2010 Hue Festival.

Renteria has created a kind of music called “Freeplay” which refers to freedom in coordinating different musical instruments to stir audiences’ emotions.
His guest appearance in Vietnam celebrates the 35^thanniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Mexico.

Mexican guitarist to Free Play in Ha Noi

HA NOI — Mexico, the land of tequila and mariachi bands, has offered the world another gift in virtuoso guitar player Paco Renteria.
Renteria will perform for the first time in Viet Nam on June 14 at the Ha Noi Opera House in celebration of the bicentennial anniversary of Mexican Independence and the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Mexico.
The concert is also a gift from the Mexican Embassy to celebrate Ha Noi's 1,000th anniversary.
Renteria started playing guitar at the age of seven and graduated from music school by age 14.
The audience will enjoy explosive Latino passion combined with sensual guitar playing in a new style created by Renteria and appropriately named, Free Play.
With roots in gypsy flamenco, Afrikaans, oriental and progressive jazz rhythms, Free Play is a new sound and rhythm which takes the listener through various stages of sensuality and bliss.
Renteria will perform with eight instrumentalists to combine the sounds of his guitar with drums, violins, flutes and trumpets.
With the release of his new albumTalisman, Renteria has organised a 2010 World Tour. His musical journey will last until 2011, taking him to places across the globe such as Chile, Australia, France, the US and Viet Nam.
Last February, he was appointed Ambassador of Mexican Music by President Felipe Calderon.
Renteria will play in Ha Noi after performances at the Hue Festival from June 7-11
